Preventing and Removing Pantry Moths from Your Kitchen

Pantry moths are small, typically about half an inch long, with greyish-brown wings. Their larvae, which cause the most damage, are creamy white caterpillars about 1/2 inch long.

Signs of an infestation include adult moths flying around your kitchen, webbing in food packages, or larvae inside the packaging.

If you notice signs of moths, remove all items from the shelves and vacuum the entire pantry, paying particular attention to corners and crevices.

Use a damp cloth and a mild soap solution to clean the shelves and the cracks and crevices where larvae might hide. Discard food items that could be infested.

Prevention methods include wiping down shelves and walls with water and white vinegar to kill any eggs or larvae.

Inspect food packages for signs of damage or infestation before purchasing. Look for small holes, webbing, or larvae inside packaging.

Store dry goods in airtight containers made of glass, metal, or heavy plastic to prevent moths from entering.

Maintain a clean kitchen and regularly clean your pantry shelves and cupboards, wiping down surfaces to remove spilt food.

Place bay leaves, whole cloves, or sachets of dried lavender in your pantry to deter moths.
