This lesson is going to explore how to play notes around chords based in the open position on “acoustic” guitar. The technique behind doing this not only sounds great, but it is easy to do. When I was first learning how to play guitar this was a sound on acoustic that I’d always found grabbed my attention right away.

I think that this sound on acoustic is a real attention grabber because we hear the chord up front and then we immediately get a melodic idea that matches the key and matches the chord harmony right after it.

The best part is that even if you’re still a beginner guitarist you’ll still be able to learn this technique without all that much difficulty.
This lesson applies a “2-Step” system based in the key of, “G Major.” The first step is all about establishing chord patterns that make up the foundation for the harmony.

In the second step, we will start to focus on the notes that relate to the chord harmony, (in our case those are notes from the, “G Major” scale).
Once we know the chords and we know the associated scale, we’re going to blend them both together using the chord up front with a simple scale run played right after it. Let’s get things started by learning how to play the “I-IV-V” primary chords from the key of, “G” Major.
