Hatirjheel = হাতিরঝিল is a lakefront located in Dhaka, Bangladesh. It has been also a transportation medium for minimizing traffic congestion the area. হাতিরঝিল is also known as Hatirjheel Begunbari.

It has been popular as a recreational spot for residents of not only living nearby but also the hole Dhaka city since it’s opening. However, the construction of this project was dome by Bangladesh Army and the Special Works Organization (SWO).
People says that Bhawal Raja used to keep his tamed elephants at Dhaka Pilkhana and the elephants used to take baths in this lake and elephants were taken to the lake mainly through the Hatirpool and Elephant Road. That’s why the name of the lake is Hatirjheel.
Hatirjheel is located at the centre of the Dhaka city and the place started from Banasree in the north to Sonargaon Hotel in the south. The area is surrounded by Gulshan, Tejgaon, Badda, Banasree, Rampura, Maghbazar and Niketon. This project of the lake made the transportation much easier for the people living near it.
It is now considered to be one of the most spectacular places in Dhaka and favourite recreational places for the city dwellers and tourists. As most of the area of Dhaka city is congested with buildings and it is hard to find fresh due to have air pollution, Hatirjheel always attracts the city dwellers with its natural cold fresh air and free spech. Water boat and Chokrakar Bus services are available for transport within the lake area and the road around it. At night, it takes a new look with various colourful lights of different hues. Especially the water shows during Friday 9:00 pm the bridges and dancing shower looks like a fairy land. Numerous pedestrians, local and foreign visitors are found here all over the day 24/7. Flowering shrubs and small trees are everywhere which decorated the lake. It is a great place for everyone friends, family, children and especially for couples. People do jogging regularly here in morning and evening in fresh air.

On 2nd January, 2013 the Hatirjheel project was inaugurated by the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. After the inauguration Hatirjheel project opened for the general people.
