The Story of Elm Hill in Norwich - City Slum to Hollywood Stardom! And the Ghost of Father Ignatius!

Описание к видео The Story of Elm Hill in Norwich - City Slum to Hollywood Stardom! And the Ghost of Father Ignatius!

Elm Hill is a picturesque cobbled medieval street in Norwich. In 1507 a destructive fire caused devastating damage here, only one building survived - the historic Britons Arms. The area thrived during the weaving trade but when the industry fell into decline Elm Hill soon became a slum with the merchant houses abandoned. In 1926 it was set for demolishment but Norwich Society stepped in and it was saved by one solitary vote and renovation took place. Elm Hill has since starred in Hollywood films and supposedly has its own ghost. Local folklore tells of Father Ignatius who was forced to flee the city in 1866. While located at 16 Elm Hill he built his own church. A keen street preacher, according to local folklore, he would reputedly curse those who refused to join him in prayer and these people went onto have an unfortunate demise. Scandal and accusations of brutality behind closed doors caused him to be hounded out of the city after rent arrears led to his eviction. Father Ignatius fled to London and passed away in 1908. His spirit has reputedly been seen roaming Elm Hill clutching a bible in hand cursing at passersby who fail to acknowledge his presence.
