In this episode of Better Place, Jonathan talks with Maha Abdallah an advocate and activist for the protection of human rights for Palestinians and more broadly the people of the Middle East. In 2020, Maha assumed a new role as international advocacy officer at the Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies, to be based in Brussels. (alas, Covid travel restrictions has not allowed her to make it there, so she is currently working from Jerusalem). Maha was formerly a senior legal researcher at Al-Haq, focusing on business and human rights and corporate accountability in occupied territory and conflict-affected settings. She was focused primarily on the role of corporations in the unlawful exploitation of natural resources, complicity and involvement in human rights abuses. Maha was also elected to the ESCR-Net (International Network for Economic, Social and Cultural Rights) Board in 2018 and serves on the Project Advisory Group of ESCR-Net’s Corporate Capture Project and on the Conflict and ESCR Advisory Group. She received her LL.M. from the Irish Centre for Human Rights and B.A in Political Science from The American University in Cairo. Jonathan and Maha first met at the 2019 United Nations' Annual Forum on Business and Human Rights, where Maha and her al-Haq colleagues received a UN award for their human rights advocacy.
