At just 13 years old, Maria Woodworth-Etter felt the call to ministry in the late 1800s, but for years Maria did not pursue the call of God on her life.; she grew up, got married, had children and settled into life as a farmers wife.

At the age of 35, Maria was sleeping when suddenly, she was awakened by Jesus himself standing next to her bedside.

Jesus asked Maria “What are you doing on the earth?”

Basically, Jesus was asking her if she was fulfilling the will of God for her life.

She offered up many excuses to Jesus to defend why she had not answered the call of God…

She had no money for Bible college…

She was busy raising children…

Her husband was a farmer and she was helping him…

And the greatest excuse she had was the fact that she wasn’t a man…

On and on her list went…

But every excuse seemed to fall short when being confronted by the very One who had called her.

She told Jesus that she would one day answer the call and when Jesus asked her “when?” She replied with “when I am prepared.”

Jesus’ responded to Maria, “while you are busy preparing, souls are perishing!”

I am reminded of Matthew chapter 8 when many came to Jesus saying they would follow Him, but offered up excuses as to why they couldn’t follow right away.

“But first let me go and bury my father,” one said.

How many “but firsts” have we come up with when Jesus has beckoned, “come and follow me.”

As we are waiting to feel qualified, people are perishing.

As we are discussing theology, people are perishing.

As we are sitting in our stained glass buildings, people are perishing.

As we are debating whether or not women can preach, people are perishing.

As we are gossiping and slandering inside the church, people are perishing.

As we are chasing careers, people are perishing.

As we are seeking platforms and titles, people are perishing.

As we are building our own kingdoms, people are perishing.

As we are worried about our image, people are perishing.

As we are busy in the day to day, people are perishing.

“What are you doing on the earth?”

Offer up any excuse, come up with every reason under the sun… but while you are trying to defend why you aren’t fulfilling the call of God, people are perishing.

Answering the call of God will cost you everything, but go and He will be with you.

He who does the will of God shall abide forever.

It’s time to be found doing the Masters work.
