Medium or Fine? Pilot Custom 823 Review & Nib Line Width Comparisons

In this video, I share my review of the Pilot Custom 823 and compare them with other pens with similar nib widths for comparison. Disclaimer: I am no expert with fountain pens - I'm still learning as I continue to collect and use these wonderful pens! This video isn't intended to show exact line widths but to visually see them next to each other to get a general feel for how other pens compare together. For the inks used, my Pilot Custom 823 Amber Medium was inked with Ferris Wheel Press Steeped Umber (an average flowing and well-behaved ink) and the Pilot C823 Smoke Fine was inked with Ku-Jaku (a wet flowing ink).

Once your warranty is over, however, you can do whatever you can to maintain your pen. Regarding the piston rod lubrication I mentioned in the video, you can apply silicon grease to the piston rod when you pull it up from the back without disassembly, however, this pen is meant to last years without needing this bit of maintenance early on! About Japanese Nibs Vs. Western nib sizes - Japanese nibs tend to be ground thinner than western nibs of the same nib size. Therefore, if you like a western medium, in most cases you'll want to go 1 size up to match your preferences of a western medium. However, as shown in this video and my experiences, this pilot custom 823 medium writes just like most juicy western mediums.
