As application deadlines approach, I want to share a little story. Just like many other Bay Area kids I wanted to go to Stanford. I especially wanted to go because my older brother was a junior there at the time.

I got my application done at the last minute (regular decision) and hit submit. A few months later, while my family was driving to Stanford to visit my older brother on campus, I got an email saying that there was a status update on my application portal.

Being the anxious highschooler I was at the time, I couldn’t wait and checked my application portal on the drive to Stanford.

I didn’t get in.

Now I had to spend the rest of that evening exploring Stanford campus and getting dinner with my brother and the rest of my family knowing that this was not going to be an option for me. (I sulked off to the side for hours 😅)

While it stung at the time, things turned out fine for me. I am actually now very happy that I didn’t end up at Stanford.

I want students and families going through this process to understand that getting deferred, waitlisted, or even rejected is an absolutely normal part of the process. It means you tried. It means you shot your shot.

So it’s OK if you’re upset, but know that you’re not the only one feeling that way. And know that in the long run you will be ok. It is an absolute privilege to even have the chance to apply to college!
