Prokofiev wrote the five movements between 1912-14, Originally titled 'Sarcastic Pieces' he shortened it to just 'Sarcasms'.
The Sarcasms are notable for Prokofiev's exploration into modernism, and Prokofiev's use of loud 'wrong notes' is thought to be the sarcastic part of these pieces.
