WE HAD NO IDEA: Brand New White Sands National Park

2nd only to New River Gorge in West Virginia, White Sands National Park is one of the newest editions to the National Parks system. AND WE ALMOST MISSED IT! We happened to be staying near Alamagordo, NM and Sunny asked what there was to do. Luckily, she asked otherwise we would've missed what has turned out to be one of our absolute favorite National Parks that we've visited. It's an amazing park that isn't over crowded and quite possibly the most unique we've seen yet.

If you are in the area, don't miss out on sledding, bringing your dog out for a run, or spend the afternoon relaxing in the shaded areas and trying out the provided grills. Also, as we suggest in all National Parks visits, if you have the opportunity to join a ranger led excursion, DO IT! We've learned so much from the rangers and it makes the experience that much more enjoyable.

If you need a sled, here's our pick. A local guide told us the round saucers work best as they are less likely to dig into the ground:
