After decades, the central government has decided to reduce the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) from Nagaland, Assam, and Manipur, Union home minister Amit Shah announced on Thursday.

Efforts by the government to end insurgency and bring lasting peace to the North East have resulted in improved security and rapid development, according to Shah.

The PM's "unwavering commitment" to bringing peace to the north-east. He added that the North-East is now seeing unprecedented peace, prosperity, and growth.

The decision to remove the Armed Forces Special Powers Act in these three states is expected to take effect on Friday.

North East insurgency has reportedly decreased over the years. According to the home ministry's website, insurgency-related occurrences fell from 1,749 in 1999 to only 209 in 2021.

A decade of low insurgency ended in 2020. Since 2014, insurgency has dropped by 75%.

Similarly, security force casualties fell by 75% while civilian deaths fell by 89%.

Also, many armed militants have surrendered. From 2019 to 2022, about 6,900 armed ultras surrendered.
