THE ENDURING BOND BETWEEN FRANCE AND THE UNITED STATES

The history of Franco-American friendship is marked by enduring cooperation and symbolic gestures, beginning with the Marquis de Lafayette’s crucial support during the American Revolutionary War, where he served as a key military leader and liaison to France. This alliance deepened with the 1803 Louisiana Purchase, in which France sold a vast territory to the young United States, doubling its size. In 1886, France gifted the Statue of Liberty to the U.S. as a symbol of shared democratic values. During World War II, American forces played a pivotal role in liberating France from Nazi occupation, reinforcing the bond between the two nations. And while “French fries” may be Belgian in origin, the name reflects America’s long-standing cultural affection for all things French.
