Having made my “Triplet Risset of Man's Desiring”    • Triplet Risset of Man's Desiring, by Mal Webb   , I thought I’d try making a really short triplet Risset Rhythm, of just one note, similarly automating the playback rate (in Reaper DAW https://www.reaper.fm/ ) from 1x to 3x over the cycle and fading in the 1/3 rate layer while fading out the 3x layer. And I halved the 3 layers’ sample rates (to 1.5x, 0.5x and 0.1666…), so that the original sample rate is in the middle of the middle layer*. The shortness of the cycle means that the endlessly-speeding-up illusion is not so marked as it is with Jean-Claude Risset’s original, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jean-Cl... or my other Risset Rhythms    • Risset Shepard Harmonic (an animated expla...   . And I liked the first low note so much that I undermined the illusion even more by having that note quite loud. The janky groove it makes** inspired me to beatbox a straighter groove (in 6) against it (but by no means quantized!) The wonky harmony it creates, being very much in the cracks of equal temperament, implied to me the chords I chose on the melodica | Eb | Eb∆ Eb7 | D7+ | , which surprised me, as even though the original note is an Eb (I play it at the end of the video), the first part of the middle layer is close to a C harmonic series starting from the 5th harmonic (E). Weird! Someday I might work out what’s going on, but in the meantime, I’m happy to just trust my ear/instincts.

Yes, the video is mimed, as evidenced by some inaccurate slide work and the fact that my audio interface (Metric Halo) is happily peaking in the background! (It’s OK, it wasn’t peaking when I recorded the audio).

*although, there’s no note at exactly that point, but the notes either side are quite close!
