In this video I show you a more unusual rebatching technique that can be used to turn old soap scraps into new soap. I’ve had better results with this technique than the normal rebatching method, although this time, the soap didn’t turn out in the best way possible :)

If you've been around for a while, you might remember this 'no heat' rebatch soap I did almost a year ago:    • No heat rebatch soap - Recycling old ...  .
This technique is basically the same, but made with the hot process method. Hot processing this soap allows us to add more soap scraps, and since they are being completely melted, corrections can be made if you made a mistake with the soap that you want to rebatch.

Thank you for watching!

This rebatching technique entails melting and blending old soap scraps with a fresh batch of soap to get a more smooth consistency to the soap batter. This is the recipe I used:

Recipe calculated with: https://soapee.com/calculator

150 g soap scraps (50% of oil weight)

108 g olive oil (36%)
18 g oat oil (6%)
12 g castor oil (4%)
84 g coconut oil (28%)
60 g shea butter (20%)
18 g cocoa butter (6%)

(total oil weight 300 g)

5 g citric acid
105 g distilled water
44.9 g sodium hydroxide (41.9 g if not using citric acid)

28.6% lye concentration, 5% superfat)

other additives:

1 tsp honey
1 tsp sodium lactate
6 g lavender essential oil
½ tsp ultramarine violet
½ tsp titanium dioxide
+some extra distilled water to mix with the honey and disperse the colorants

Cure the soap for about 4 weeks before using it on your skin.

○ Citric acid information

When citric acid and sodium hydroxide lye (NaOH) are combined, sodium citrate is created. Sodium citrate works as a chelator in soap.

A chelator traps metal ions such as calcium and magnesium that can be found in tap water.

These metal contaminants can cause rancidity and soap scum in handmade soap.

A chelator binds to these metals so that they can’t bind to the soap molecules. This way the soap won’t react with them and the soap's lather improves + shelf life increases.

Citric acid does not lower the pH of soap. Instead it consumes some of the lye and increases the superfat. Add 6 g extra lye for every 10 g of citric acid added to a soap recipe if you want to keep the superfat % at the same level.

How much citric acid should be added to soap?

Usage rate in bar soap is 1-2% of the oil weight.

How to use citric acid

Add citric acid to the distilled water and dissolve completely before adding the lye, or make a separate solution of citric acid and distilled water and add to the oils.
