A "Behind the Scenes" video telling the story of Monty (the Whippet) and his day at Crufts 2020 when he competed in the Kennel Club Good Citizens Special Pre Beginners Dog Obedience Grand Final.

This is a light hearted account of the day with "rough" footage as I was trying to keep "out of the way" at times - as I explain in the video!

The Kennel Club Good Citizens Special Pre Beginners Obedience Stakes was introduced to encourage GC Bronze Award achievers to take part & enter the world of Dog Obedience competition.

The Obedience Stakes test is a combination of the current Good Citizens Dog Scheme exercises & the Pre Beginners Obedience test. Dogs must have obtained the Bronze Award to take part.

In 2019, there were 31 qualifying heats spread throughout the UK (Monty won three of them!) followed by 4 semi finals - 2 held at the Discover Dogs event in London & 2 held in South Edinburgh. Monty won his semi final.

I believe that this may have been the first time that a Whippet had ever qualified for the Grand Final in the 15 years of the event.

The purpose of the film is just to give you a brief glimpse of the experience of the day, from Monty's perspective! There was no chance for second takes - very much a "point and shoot" situation. The film of Monty's actual round was taken from a static camera left at the side of the ring (as I had to be well away from the action in case Monty caught sight of me!) and on occasions the camera was misbehaving itself!

PS I had to add some music during the video in order to "drown out" some background music playing (in the "heelwork to music" competition in the next ring). If I had not done this then there would have been a music copyright claim against the video!

After this Monty went on to do the following .....

In 2019, Monty achieved his Pre Beginners Title (won out of Pre Beginners) and came third in the National Obedience class final. He also achieved his Rally Obedience Level 2 (Ex) title.

On 7th March 2020, Monty came 8th (out of 20) in the Kennel Club Good Citizens Special Pre Beginners Obedience Stakes Final at Crufts.

Monty was a member of the South & South West team in the Inter Regional Obedience Championship at Crufts in 2022 & 2023 (the team came second in 2022).

In 2023 he won his second Beginners competition (thereby winning out of that level) and at that point, he was retired from Competitive Obedience
