This black and white film is one of the episodes of "Yesterday's Newsreels", an early 1950s TV show made from the General Newsreel collection. It features ten segments of historic highlights. Marines Help Haiti 1915 (:29). Port-Au-Prince is on the verge of bankruptcy. Shown are large crowds of people. (:35-1:15). The Marines arrive to provide protection. They also play horseshoes and box (1:16-1:59). Food is served at an outdoor buffet (2:00). Troops of the Palace Guard march (2:15). President Sudre Dartigue rides in a carriage under the protection of the Marines (2:18-2:35). Marines search out the insurgents and put them in jail (2:26-3:49). The Marines leave in 1934 (3:50-4:11). Tall and Short of It 1928 (4:23). Both men shown are 21 years old: Lew Gordon is 8’ tall while George Brown is 2’2” tall (4:28-5:00). Three Million Dollar Gold Medal 1920 (5:01). Pauline Hinkle, 15 years old, receives a gold medal from National Commander Frederic Galbraith of the American Legion for her sale of over $3M in Liberty Bonds (5:06-5:35). Personalities (5:39). Inventor Lee de Forest shakes hands with composer Hugo Riesenfeld. Lee invented Audion, and electronic amplifying vacuum tube (5:45-5:59). Samuel L. Rothafel, known as Roxy, is a theatre manager and sponsor of the radio show ‘Roxies Gang’ (6:15-6:36). A City Collapses! 1921 (6:40). A coal mine collapses under a five-block area of Scranton, Pennsylvania, causing damage and death (6:45-7:27). Buddhist Temple in America 1920s (7:30). Japanese Americans build a Buddhist Temple in Fresno, California (7:35-7:50). Service Deluxe 1928 (7:54). A ‘waiter’ picks up a table with his teeth and chairs in his hands and moves them to a different location. He also uses his teeth to pick up a seated customer and stacks of tables (8:00-8:40). Aviation 1927 (8:42). The USS Los Angeles (ZR-3) airship is shown at Lakehurst, New Jersey. The dirigible leaves for the District of Columbia. Baltimore is shown below, as is Annapolis. It passes the Washington Monument before landing at Bowling Field. President Calvin Coolidge is present for the christening ceremony by Mrs. Coolidge (8:48-10:15). Fashions of the Day 1920 (10:18). Spotted at a dog show is a woman wearing the latest fashion: a masculine-looking coat and pointed shoes (10:22-11:58). Sports (11:00). 1925, American Helen Wills loses a rare tennis match in Paris (11:05-11:33). 1922, Grand Beach, Michigan, slide ski jumpers perform in a tournament. One falls and slides down the slope. (11:05-12:10).
