HIKING the TOWER TRAIL at DEVILS TOWER NATIONAL MONUMENT WYOMING

Devils Tower is an iconic geologic wonder that rises out of the Black Hills in northeast Wyoming. In 1906, President Theodore Roosevelt named Devils Tower the first National Monument of the United States. We hiked the Tower Trail at Devils Tower National Monument. The trail is a 1.3-mile paved hike that encircles the base of the tower. The hike provides spectacular views of the tower, as well as beautiful views of the forest and wildlife.

The name Devils Tower originated during a military expedition, when an interpreter botched the Native American name, calling it ‘Bad God’s Tower’ which was then shortened to Devils Tower and the name stuck. The tower, known by several northern plains tribes at Bear Lodge, it is a scared site for many Native Americans.

How Devils Tower formed has been an ongoing discussion amongst geologists. Geologists agree that the tower began as magma beneath the Earth’s surface. They also agree that erosion exposed the tower that we see today. What they do not agree upon is exactly how the magma cooled to form the tower that we see today. Whatever the explanation, this magnificent natural wonder remains a beautiful place to visit and hike around.
