This is a series of concept arts for the infamously cancelled Superman Lives movie from the late 90s, which would've been directed by Tim Burton and starring Nicolas Cage as Superman. Kevin Smith was originally hired to write a script in 1996 with actors like Ben Affleck for Superman and isMichael Rooker as Lex Luthor, Linda Fiorentino as Lois, with Robert Rodriguez as the director while producer Jon Peters wanted Sean Penn as Superman and Renny Harin as director. Until the script landed on Nic Cage's lap to play either Lex or Superman but suggested Tim Burton as director which Smith and Peters supported. Once Burton was hired, Smith was fired now that Burton had creative control on the project, and hired Wesley Strict to write a script in 1997. Costumes and concept art were already being designed and made but WB didn't look at the script yet and had violent reactions towards it for being too artsy-fartsy and hired Dan Gilroy to repolish the script for more action and in-depth characters. The movie was originally scheduled to be released on July 4th 1998 but because of the Gilroy script, it would've been delayed to the summer of 1999. (Not dissimilar to when Burton was hired for Batman in 1985 and wouldn't come out until 1989.)

Apart from Nicolas Cage as Superman, Kevin Spacey was considered for Lex Luthor (which was how he was cast in Superman Returns, Christopher Walken as Brainiac, Chris Rock as Jimmy Olsen after beating out Matthew Perry, Paul Rudd, Loren Dean, Matthew Glave, Tom Everett Scott, Lukas Haas, Robert Sean Leonard, Scott Michael Campbell, Dan Futterman, Josh Charles, Jack Noseworthy, Jeremy Davies, Balthazar Getty, Savion Glover, and Marlon Wayans. Sandra Bullock was Jon Peters's pick for Lois Lane but she turned it down with Burton being uninterested in her casting. According to the documentary, other potential actresses included Courtney Cox, Julianne Moore, Mira Sorvino, Bridget Fonda, Annabeth Gish, Julia Roberts, Elisabeth Shue, Jennifer Aniston and Gwyneth Paltrow. The movie's production became stressful with Jon Peters making many last minute choices on many last minute ideas, the budget being too high, the overbearing fear of Nicolas Cage as Superman, and concerns of Tim Burton not making a commercially marketed movie following Batman Returns. Burton left to direct Sleepy Hollow, Jon Peters produced Wild Wild West (with most of the budget of Superman Lives was used for that film,) and the project died in 2000 before morphing into the other cancelled Superman Flyby movie between 2002-2004 and became Superman Returns in 2006.
