Giuseppe Francesco Gaspare Melchiorre Baldassare Sammartini (January 6, 1695 - ca.November 17 and 23, 1750) Also: Gioseffo, S Martini, St Martini, San Martini, San Martino, Martini, Martino. Italian composer and oboist. Most of his professional life was spent in London. His younger brother, Giovanni Battista Sammartini, was also a composer. Sammartini was skilled on the oboe, flute and recorder, and known in London as 'the greatest oboist the world had ever known.' Sammartini worked as music master for Frederick, Prince of Wales, from 1736 until his death in 1750, and dedicated many of his works works to the members of Frederick's family, including Augusta and their children. Sammartini's musical style may be described as Baroque, incorporated with Classical elements, Galant, and Sturm und Drang. His Viola Concerto also known as 'Violin Concerto, Opus 5 No. 10' was not published until 1747 but likely composed earlier. The definitive date is not known.

A viola pomposa is a five-stringed baroque string instrument, similar to a viola but with an extra high E string, giving it a wider range. It's sometimes referred to as a violino pomposo (pompous violin) or violoncello da spalla (shoulder cello). The name pomposa refers to the instrument's slightly wider size compared to a standard viola.
