JHARIA: The burning city
This land has been burning like this for 100 years.
It feels as if there's a fire burning inside, but not completely.
These visuals are from Jharia in Jharkhand, where coal mining began in 1894.
But the first underground fire was detected in 1916, and since then, 3.5 crore tonne coal have burned to ash beneath the ground.
Because of this, the land has become hollow and is continuously sinking.
Cracks appearing in the walls of people's homes is a common occurrence, and many houses have burned to ashes.
On top of that, locals suffer from various diseases due to the coal smoke.
The government has taken steps to extinguish this underground fire and relocate people from here, but there hasn't been much difference in the on-ground situation in Jharia.
