In this video I talk about what will happen to our coins and bullion now that the Queen has died and we have a New King. Queen Elizabeth 2nd has passed and we will have a new face on our coins, King Charles 3rd. It is an exciting time but one with a lot of unknowns.

These are some of the main questions I will answer about The Death of Queen Elizabeth The Second.

Will the Royal Mint stop minting coins with the Queen on them?
Will Elizabeth II coins become rare? Should I keep them?
What way will King Charles face on his coins?
Will upcoming UK commemorative coin releases happen?

In the past, production of new coins has been halted upon the death of a monarch.

However, it's been seven decades since the Royal Mint has had to issue coinage for a new King or Queen so what worked then may not make sense today.

What we do know is that The Royal Mint holds stockpiles of coins which could be released into circulation to keep up with demand for coinage. Production of more Elizabeth II coins at the Mint's plant in Llantrisant, near Cardiff, might still be necessary as a stopgap measure.

When will King Charles coins be available?
We won't see any new coins with King Charles' face on them until January 2023 and preparing these will be a big undertaking.

Though we've seen Charles face on UK commemorative coins during his time as Heir Apparent, The Royal Mint will have to commission a new engraving of him. Supposedly, Charles refused to sit for a coin portrait while his mother was alive.

Each of Elizabeth II's five definitive coinage effigies were chosen via an anonymous competition. Charles III's portrait will likely be picked in the same way. Entries are assessed by the Royal Mint Advisory Committee and their choice is approved by the Chancellor of the Exchequer and ultimately the monarch themselves.
