USE A BOWLINE TO TIE THE ROPE AROUND YOUR WAIST IN A EMERGENCY -- ROCK CLIMBING MENTOR SERIES

FOR USE WHEN NO OTHER OPTIONS ARE AVAILABLE OR ONLY FOR A QUICK BELAY ON SHORT LOW ANGLE STEPS. DO NOT USE ON OVERHANGING OR STEEP CLIMBS. For emergency use, or a quick tie in for an off vertical rock or ice step when a climbing harness is not available: You can tie in to the end of the climbing rope using a Bowline Knot. This is an "old school" tie-in approach used before harnesses and swammi belts were invented (1800's and early 1900's) or as widely available as they are today. While this is a reasonable option for emergencies when no other options are available, there are significant hazards to using this tie-in approach on steep or overhanging ground: A danger of suffocation and/or rib cage damage is possible. Leader falls are not advised using this approach. In the "Old School" the "LEADER DOES NOT FALL" was the mantra. Part of the reason for that was inferior equipment, ropes and this tie in approach.
