The steps to mentally squaring any number up to 100 are:
1) Square a nearby number ending in 5 or 0 and keep the tens digits (drop the last 0). Easy way to square a number ending in 5 is    • How to Square Numbers ending in 5 eas...  . (Every number is within two of a 0 or 5, but numbers ending in 3 and 7 can also be found from zero.) Example 22: use 20 squared is 400: tens are 40.
2) Take 1/5 of that number you squared and add or subtract that to the tens digits, as many times as you are going up or down. THAT is your tens-digit of your answer. 22 example is 48 (40 +4 + 4).
3) Square the ones-digit number. Use the ones-digit of the answer (no carrying needed!). Example 22: 2 x 2 = 4. Answer 48 4. or 484.
