President Trump has described a shooting at a Mormon church in Michigan that left at least four dead and eight injured as another “attack on Christians”. The shooting occurred at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc, about 50 miles north of Detroit, William Renye, the local police chief, told reporters.

Police named the gunman as Thomas Jacob Sanford, 40, who drove a vehicle through the front doors of the church, before opening fire and setting the building ablaze. Officers said they expected to find more victims in the building and that the gunman was also dead.

The New York Post reported that Sanford was a former US Marine and Iraq war veteran, from the nearby city of Burton, Michigan. Pictures posted on Facebook suggested he was a Trump supporter. In one image, Sanford posed alongside his wife and son wearing a T-shirt with the image of the president and the message: “Make Liberals Cry Again.”

The FBI is calling the attack an “act of targeted violence”. Police also said they had found suspected explosive devices at the scene.

More than 100 people were said to be in the church on Sunday morning when the attack occurred. Two of those who died were discovered in the building after the fire was extinguished just before 1pm local time.

Police said they did not yet know of the motive for the fire or shooting, but they were searching the suspect’s home. No further details were released.
