Artist Statement: FRESA by Patricio May

In a world where screens have become the windows to our lives, the bombardment of images has reached an almost unbearable frequency. Born in 2000, I've witnessed the transformation of reality into a digital blur, where the distinction between what is real and what is not fades away with every swipe. FRESA is my response to this overwhelming flood of visual noise.

The images we consume daily—often centered around violence, drugs, and pornography—are replicated and shared to the point of absurdity. They lose their meaning, becoming mere copies of copies, distorted and deformed until they are unrecognizable. Through my art, I blow these images up to confront the viewer, forcing a moment of reckoning with the chaos that we often passively absorb. The result is a distorted reflection of our consumeristic society—a society where even the grotesque and the mundane are consumed with equal appetite.

The long red carpet, covered in dark graffiti, represents the path we've been led down—a path filled with the shadows of consumerism and the emptiness that often accompanies it. The McDonald's hamburgers served during the exhibit are not just a meal but a symbol of how deeply consumer culture has permeated our lives, down to the food we eat, the way we eat it, and the hands that deliver it to us.

Rather than speak directly about the art, I chose to let the raw energy of the Pez Heads, a punk rock band, fill the space. Their music embodies the chaotic, gritty, and relentless nature of life in Los Angeles—a city that can be as overwhelming as it is inspiring. The performance was a visceral expression of the tension, the anger, and the vibrancy that comes with being a young person in this city.

FRESA is not just an exhibit; it's an experience. It's a mirror held up to the fragmented and frenzied world we live in, asking us to confront the reality of our consumption and the toll it takes on our perceptions and our souls.
