How Kylo Ren Survived Chewie's Bowcaster in The Force Awakens

In The Force Awakens, after Kylo Ren kills his father Han Solo, Chewbacca unloads a blaster shot which penetrates Kylo's armor. However, despite what Chewie's weapon does to others who find themselves in it crosshairs, the blast does not kill Kylo.
