The American Civil War exacerbated the military career of many Americans, but the meteoric rise of Philip Sheridan is special. He was a good bookkeeper and probably would have spent his time as such if he did not push for a field command. Once in command of troops, Sheridan quickly rose through the ranks to command a division of infantry in the Army of the Cumberland. He fought at the Battle of Perryville, the Battle of Stones River (in the Slaughter Pen), the Tullahoma Campaign, and the Battle of Chickamauga. At the Battle of Missionary Ridge, Ulysses S. Grant realized the capabilities of this diminutive commander and recruited him to come east to the Army of the Potomac and take charge of its cavalry. He ridded the Shenandoah Valley of Confederate troops and helped chase Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia to Appomattox Court House. After the war, he launched brutal campaigns against Native Americans on the western plains and ruled with an iron fist in the South during Reconstruction.
