In celebration of the 150th anniversary of baseball in Japan, and the lively and ongoing interchange between the U.S. and Japan through one of the most popular sports in both countries, the 2022 Japan Society Award honors baseball star Hideki Matsui.
Hideki Matsui (born 1974, Ishikawa Prefecture) played for the New York Yankees and the Yomiuri Giants during his 20-year professional baseball career in Japan and the United States. Known as “Godzilla” by fans in both countries, Mr. Matsui became the first Japanese player to be named Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the World Series. In Major League Baseball, he won one World Series championship, was named MVP of the World Series once, and was a two-time All-Star. In Nippon Professional Baseball, he won the Japan Series championship three times, was named MVP of the Japan Series once and MVP of the Central League three times, and was a nine-time All-Star.
Mr. Matsui received Japan's National Honor Award in 2013, established by the Prime Minister’s office to honor “those persons, respected by a broad spectrum of the people, whose distinguished accomplishments have brought a light of hope to society.” In 2018, Mr. Matsui became the youngest player ever to be inducted into the Japanese Baseball Hall of Fame; he was one of six Japanese players to be inducted in their first year on the ballot.
Mr. Matsui is currently President of the Matsui 55 Baseball Foundation, whose mission is to have as many young people as possible learn the joy of playing baseball and develop a passion for the game, while promoting the importance of critical thinking skills.

Hall of Famer Joe Torre was named a Special Assistant to Commissioner of Major League Baseball Robert D. Manfred, Jr. in 2020. Mr. Torre serves as a liaison to the general managers and field managers of the 30 Major League Clubs and the Major League Umpires. From 2011 to 2014, he was MLB’s Executive Vice President of Baseball Operations, and he became MLB’s Chief Baseball Officer in 2015.
Mr. Torre, a manager for 29 seasons, ranks fifth all-time with 2,326 managerial wins. He led the New York Yankees to four World Series Championships, six American League pennants and 12 Postseason appearances in his 12 seasons in pinstripes. The two-time AL Manager of the Year also guided the New York Mets, the Atlanta Braves, the St. Louis Cardinals, and the Los Angeles Dodgers. In 2013, he managed Team USA in the World Baseball Classic, and in 2017 he served as the general manager for the WBC Champion American team. During his playing career with the Milwaukee/Atlanta Braves, the Cardinals, and the Mets, the nine-time All-Star compiled a .297 batting average, 2,342 hits, and 252 home runs, and he was the National League’s Most Valuable Player in 1971 with the Cardinals. Mr. Torre was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2014. He is the Chairman of the Joe Torre Safe At Home Foundation, which he and his wife Ali launched in 2002.
