Day 7 of the Pieterpad, the most famous long-distance trail in the Netherlands! This stage takes me from Tienray to Vierlingsbeek (21km)—but the big question is: Can I walk with a broken toe? Broken, cracked, or just badly bruised? I don’t know because I didn’t get an X-ray.

Along the way, I share a bit of history about Hanna van de Voort in Tienray, attempt to buy a sandwich in Wanssum, and wonder if my picnic will only consist of soup and snacks.

The route takes me through sandy terrain, forests, and a final stretch along the railway before reaching Vierlingsbeek.

Hanna van de Voort (born in Meerlo, Limburg) was a maternity nurse in Tienray during World War II. Encouraged by her mother, she and 22-year-old students Nico Dohmen and Kurt Loewenstein helped hide 123 Jewish children between 1943 and 1944. Most were smuggled from the Hollandsche Schouwburg in Amsterdam by Piet Meerburg’s student resistance group.
Hanna sheltered children at her home before placing them with foster families, providing false identities and support. Together with Nico, she ensured their survival, relocating them when needed.
On the night of 31 July–1 August 1944, after a betrayal by Dutch Nazi Lucien Nahon, the Nazis raided hiding places in Tienray. Several Jewish children were arrested and deported to Auschwitz, where four were murdered:
Floortje de Paauw (15-12-1933)
Wim de Paauw (17-12-1934)
Louis van Wezel (16-5-1936)
Dick van Wezel (6-3-1934)
Hanna was arrested, tortured for information, but revealed nothing. Released after nine days, she suffered permanent health damage and died on 26 July 1956.
Despite the risks, Hanna van de Voort and Nico Dohmen’s courage saved many lives.

Can you walk 21 km with a broken toe? I decided to find out on Day 7 of the Pieterpad! From Tienray to Vierlingsbeek, through forests, sandy paths, and along the railway. Plus, a bit of history about Hanna van de Voort and a failed attempt to buy a sandwich in Wanssum. Was my picnic really just soup and snacks? Watch the video to see how it went!
