Driving in Germany: Bundesstraße B50 E42 from AK Wittlich (A1) to Büchenbeuren

In this video you can ride along on Bundesstraße B50 E42 from Autobahnkreuz Wittlich to Büchenbeuren in western Germany. The B50 is an important West-East connection across the Rhineland-Pfalz state and has recently been upgraded in some places.

From AK Wittlich to Gonzerath there is a 2 x 2 alignment, which includes the not too long ago opened Hochmoselbrücke (4:05). The bridge spans the Mosel valley at a height of 160 meters and total length of 1,7 kilometers near the towns of Ürzig and Zeltingen-Rachtig. In the video you barely notice you are on it, but it comes right after a tunnel.

For a to me unknown reason in the beginning a stretch of 2 x 2 was reduced to one lane only, maybe because of some final road works, who knows. Near Gonzerath the B50 joins the B327 alignment and continues as a regular Bundesstraße for a while until the town of Büchenbeuren. It's planned to upgrade this part of B50 in the future to 2 x 2 as well, so that 2 lanes are available on each side across the distance between AK Wittlich and AD Rheinböllen (A61).

If you look at the map, it's unfortunate that no straighter alternative has been worked out. Most likely this is cost-related, since here too the landscape and terrain are a challenge.
