Circuits, Types of Circuits, Series and parallel Circuits and their characteristics explained.
Current Electricity
When the positive terminal of battery is connected to its negative terminal through a metallic (copper) wire, charge begins to flow through the wire. The electricity produced by the flow of charge is called current electricity
Electric circuit
The path of electric current is called circuit.
Components of a circuit
A circuit has four main components.
i. A source of electricity such as battery or cell or a source of electricity
ii. A device that uses electricity such as a bulb, fan etc.
iii. A switch to control the flow of current or to open and close the circuit
iv. Wires or conductors to connect the sources of electricity, the device and the switch.
States of circuits
There are two states of circuit
i. Open circuit: When switch is off. The does not flow through it. This circuit is an open circuit.
ii. Closed circuit: When switch is on. The current flows through it. This circuit is a closed circuit.
Types of circuits
There are two types of circuits
i. Series circuit
ii. Parallel circuit
i. Series Circuit: When two or more devices are connected in a circuit in such a way that they all provide a single path for current, this type of circuit is called series circuit.
Advantages of series circuit
a. It uses less wire.
b. It is used for beautification and decoration.
c. All devices can be controlled from a single point.
Disadvantages of series circuit
a. It provides single path.
b. If fault happens in any part of the circuit or in any one device, all devices stop working.
c. Total resistance of the circuit increases.
Parallel circuit: When two or more devices are connected in a circuit in such a way that each device is provided a separate path, such a circuit is called parallel circuit
Advantages of Parallel circuit
a. In parallel circuit, each device is controlled separately
b. Fault or off status of a device does not affect the functioning of the others
c. Equal voltage is available for all devices in a parallel circuit.
d. The total resistance of the circuit decreases and hence less energy dissipation occurs.
Application of parallel circuit
Parallel circuits are very useful hence they are used in homes, offices, schools, factories, automobiles, computers, electronic devices
