Synology DiskStation DS1815+ No Power Fault 'Workaround' - Using A PC Power Supply To Recover Data

Описание к видео Synology DiskStation DS1815+ No Power Fault 'Workaround' - Using A PC Power Supply To Recover Data

In this video I show a method I have found to start up my Synology DiskStation DS1815+ network attached storage device (NAS). My unit ended up with the "No Power Fault", where the unit shows no signs of life at all. This happened randomly one day, when I came to the unit it had turned itself off and no longer could be turned on, it would just sit there completely dead and unresponsive.

In my case the power supply within the unit still appeared to work, They use a standard 24-pin ATX power connector for the motherboard from the power supply that I plugged into my tester and it checked out ok so at first I assumed this was a motherboard fault.
However then I came up with the idea to try the motherboard with a PC power supply and to my surprise that also worked!

So as a simple workaround I powered the motherboard in the unit by using this standard ATX PC power supply then used my tester to operate the Synology power supply which powered the hard drive backplane as this uses a non-standard power connectors from the power supply.

This allowed me to recover some data I hadn't yet double backed up elsewhere. I could have just re-downloaded said data from one of my remote servers, but my internet connectivity is slow and this would have taken me an unnecessary amount of time as apposed to a direct LAN transfer from the DiskStation unit.

I believe the fault in my units case was indeed the internal power supply going bad. I could have probably repaired it, but my DiskStation is only around half way through the warranty period so I shipped it off for repair by Synology after I'd copied off this data.

This process will be the same for most Synology NAS units if this is the problem with your NAS too. For example, the DS1515+ is simply a smaller version of the DS1815+ and near-identical.
