Pipetting systems using pressure reservoirs and valves with controlled switching times can be realized easily and at low cost. Unfortunately, the actual liquid volumes aspirated and dispensed with such systems will depend on the viscosity of the liquid and the dimensions of the pipetting tip. CSEM's pipetting system with passive flow control can practically get rid of this dependence by introducing an air restriction with a high pressure drop, which dominates the pressure drop of the entire pipetting unit. Pressure drop changes in the pipetting tip, which are caused by different viscosities of the liquid dispensed or different tip dimensions, thus become negligible.

A positive and negative pressure reservoir provide pressure to the system, enabling aspiration and dispensation by controlling two small valves. Opening and closing times are within milliseconds, thus enabling even small droplets to be dispensed.

As an additional feature, two integrated pressure sensors measuring the pressure drop across the air restriction, allow the system to a) monitor the flow rate, b) detect any irregularities, and c) localize the liquid level below the pipetting tip.
