In this crucial scene, towards the end of the film, Max reveals his true identity to Lily, who realises that her trust in Max led to the downfall of her boyfriend. Romy's acting in this film, and in this scene in particular, catapulted her to the top of French actresses (though Romy was, of course, Austro-German!), and she would remain at the top until she passed away on May 29th, 1982.
