Both of the bridges that have crossed the river at Wandsworth have been considered a merely functional part of the riverscape. The first bridge, opened in 1873 was too narrow and also was too weak for heavy vehicles. It's replacement, opened in 1940, is a steel cantilever bridge, painted two shades of blue in an attempt to camouflage it from German bombers.
Wandsworth is one of the more unusual looking Thames bridges. The low curves used for the arches were apparently designed to reflect the low river banks around the bridge. The bridge was painted this colour during the war to make it blend in with the river and sky
The present Wandsworth Bridge is a triumph of engineering pragmatism. It is not extravagant, it is not pretty, but this steel cantilever bridge was an efficient use of materials at a time when Britain's resources were severely stretched. Amazingly, the planners considered the needs of the long term and the bridge was designed to allow widening from four lanes to six lanes should future demand require it.
