Ann Arbor, MI History

Ann Arbor was founded in 1825 and named for the wives of the city’s founders, both named Ann. The University of Michigan moved from Detroit to Ann Arbor in 1837, and the city experienced rapid growth until about 1912. Ann Arbor lost a bid to become Michigan’s state capital, but instead became the new home of the University of Michigan in 1837 after the university moved away from Detroit.

Ann Arbor Geography

The United States Census Bureau estimates that the city covers an area of or 27.83 square miles (72.08 km2) which is land, and approximately 2.25 square miles (6.08 km2) of it is water, much of it in the Huron River.

Ann Arbor is 18 miles (29.0 km) west of Ypsilanti by car. Ann Arbor is also 67.8 miles (109.7 km) west of Detroit by car. Ann Arbor Charter Township borders the city on the north and east sides, and they are just a few miles apart from one another on average map distance of about 5%.

The landscape in Ann Arbor is primarily comprised of hills and vales, with the territory becoming more steep as it nears the Huron River. The elevation changes from around 750 feet (230 m) by the Huron River to 1,015 feet (309 m) on Ann Arbor’s west side.
