Ultramafic rocks are a diverse group of igneous rocks with a low silica content, typically below 45%. They are primarily composed of minerals rich in iron and magnesium, such as olivine and pyroxene. Serpentinite: Serpentinite is an ultramafic rock formed by the metamorphism of peridotite. It's characterized by the presence of serpentine minerals. Serpentinization is a process where olivine in peridotite reacts with water and is transformed into serpentine minerals. Serpentinite is known for its distinctive greenish appearance and is often associated with tectonic plate boundaries and subduction zones.

Komatiite: Komatiite is a rare and ancient type of ultramafic rock with an extremely low silica content. It is primarily composed of olivine and pyroxene. Komatiites are notable for their high magnesium content and were more common in the Earth's early history. They provide valuable insights into the planet's geological evolution.

Pyroxenite: Although not exclusively ultramafic, pyroxenite contains significant pyroxene minerals and can have ultramafic characteristics. Pyroxenites can be associated with the formation of certain types of magma and are often found in the Earth's upper mantle.
