Today we remember World War II Medal of Honor recipient 2nd Lt. George W. G. Boyce Jr., buried at Manila American Cemetery.

Boyce was serving with the 112th Cavalry Regiment when his platoon was ordered to relieve a surrounded unit near Afua, New Guinea, on July 23, 1944.

While advancing under intense enemy fire, a grenade landed between him and his men. Without hesitation, Boyce threw himself onto the grenade, sacrificing his life to save those behind him.

His selfless act of courage exemplified the highest traditions of the U.S. Armed Forces and earned him the Medal of Honor.

Boyce is buried alongside nearly 17,000 Americans at the Manila American Cemetery in the Philippines.
