Cystic ovary disease is an example of reproductive failure in large animals. It is the most common example of ovulation failure. Among domestic animals, cystic ovary disease is the most common in cattle, particularly dairy breeds; however, it occurs sporadically also in dogs, cats, pigs, and mares.

Major categories of cysts include follicular cysts, luteinized follicular cysts and cystic corpora lutea.
Follicular cysts are characterized by low plasma progesterone concentrations unlike luteal cysts which have high progesterone levels . Therefore, the use of progesterone profile helps differentiate the luteal and follicular ovarian cysts.

Symptoms. Abnormal estrous behavior patterns are the most noticeable sign of cystic ovarian disease. This includes persistent oestrus, shortened oestrus intervals or failure to cycle (anoestrus).

Ovarian cysts are caused by a failure of the normal LH surge that causes ovulation.
