Disaster has struck Cape Verde as deadly floods hit Sao Vicente island, killing at least 8 people and leaving 1,500 displaced. Torrential rains dumped 193mm of water in just five hours — nearly double the island’s yearly rainfall.

Roads have been destroyed, cars swept away, and homes submerged. Rescue teams are still searching for the missing, but damaged infrastructure is slowing relief efforts.

Authorities say the flooding may have been worsened by Tropical Storm Erin, which is churning off the coast with winds up to 45 mph.
