Hello students, Welcome to Agrimly.
Today we will discuss Environmental Pollution and its hazards to crops, animals, and humans.

Agriculture is both a victim and a contributor of pollution. Let’s look at the major types.

Soil pollution occurs due to excessive use of fertilizers like urea, DAP, and potash, pesticide residues such as DDT, and industrial effluents contaminating farmland.

Water pollution is caused by agricultural runoff carrying nitrates, phosphates, and pesticides. Excess irrigation leads to salinity and alkalinity, while livestock waste also contaminates water. A real example is nitrate contamination in groundwater of Punjab and Haryana.

Air pollution comes from stubble burning, releasing CO₂, CO, SO₂, NOx, and particulate matter. Fertilizers release ammonia, and paddy fields with livestock emit methane. This is one major cause of smog in the NCR region.

Noise pollution also affects rural areas due to continuous use of tractors, harvesters, and pumps.

The hazards are serious:

Crops suffer reduced productivity.

Animals face respiratory and digestive problems.

Humans experience smog-related illnesses and unsafe food.

Thus, agriculture-linked pollution threatens food safety, biodiversity, and sustainability.
