Utah Lake nears capacity, plans first controlled release in decade to avoid flooding

The Utah Lake Water Users Association and the state engineer announced that they are planning a controlled release of Utah Lake.

This is the first time in a decade Utah Lake is at max capacity, because of last year’s snowpack and water conservation efforts, it is 99 percent full.

Once they open the gates, the water will flow down the Jordan River and into the Great Salt Lake.

“Utah Lake is a very pivotal lake when it comes to the water in the Provo River Basin,” Jordan Valley Water Conservancy District Water Supply Manager Wade Tuft said. “A lot of components go with that, but this is the first time since 2011 that the lake has actually reached the compromise level.”

Due to a court order, once Utah Lake reaches compromised levels of 870,000-acre feet they must open the gates and release the water to prevent flooding.
