(5 Nov 2019) Britain's Liberal Democrats Party leader Jo Swinson claimed tens of billions of pounds (US dollars) could be reinvested into the economy if Brexit was stopped and if her party is in power.
During the Lib Dems general election campaign launch on Tuesday, Swinson said that staying in the European Union would produce a 50-billion-pound (64-billion-dollar) "Remain bonus", which could be spent on public services.
The party is seen as an outside chance to win government in the December 12 poll, behind the Conservatives and Labour, but it has positioned itself as the only party that will stop Britain's withdrawal from the European Union.
In her address to party faithful in London, Swinson criticised Prime Minister Boris Johnson's Brexit position and accused him of having written "two different columns" and then choosing one "which would give him the best chance of being Prime Minister".
Johnson has said if his Conservative Party wins next month's election, he will get Parliament to ratify his divorce deal with the European Union and Britain will leave the bloc by January 31.
Swinson also hit out at opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn and claimed he would "not give you a straight answer" about Brexit.
Left-of-centre Labour has said if it wins government, within six months it will negotiate a new Brexit divorce deal that keeps close relations between Britain and the EU and then hold a national referendum on whether to leave on those terms or remain in the bloc.
