Mended eggs, meat spots, blood spots… weird eggs happen! An odd egg here or there doesn’t necessarily indicate a problem, but keeping a close eye on your nest boxes is always a good idea. Here are a few more egg oddities and their causes. Broken and mended eggs happen when the eggshell cracks during the calcification process and repairs itself before being laid. A broken and mended egg appears cracked when candled but you can feel the difference. Hens that are startled or stressed during egg formation can lead to broken and mended eggs. Meat spots are pieces of tissue that break off from the hen’s oviduct walls during egg formation and enters the white of the egg. Meat spots are not caused by having a rooster or embryonic development and are perfectly safe to consume, you can pick them out or scramble them in. Some hens are more prone to laying eggs with meat spots but excess stress can cause them as well. I candle all of my eggs before packaging them for sale and keep any with large meat spots for myself. Blood spots are very similar to meat spots, they aren’t the result of fertilization and have nothing to do with the absence or presence of a rooster. A blood tinted egg is caused by a blood vessel rupturing during egg formation. Sometimes these spots are small and other times the whole egg appears bloody. Blood tinted eggs are safe to consume but are unsightly. They can be scrambled back and fed to your flock if they appear too bloody.
