Mt. Maunganui Summit Hike, New Zealand | Julianne and Ralph

Let us take you to the most populous city in the Bay of Plenty region, Tauranga. And just a 15 minute drive from the centre, you'll arrive at the most popular beach town, Mount Maunganui. To climb up the summit, you have 3 tracks to choose from.

The easiest track is the Base Track which is a 2.9 kilometres round trip with 20 metres elevation change. This is an easy and picturesque circuit around the bottom of Mount Maunganui. This is a 45 minute walk. This track is suitable for all levels of fitness and for strollers too.

For a moderate ascent, add up 3.1 kilometres from the Base Track. Ascend to the summit via the Oruahine Track with 4WD Track for exceptional cliffside views. No cars can get through except for emergency and service use only. This will take you 1 hour and 10 minutes or so from the Mount Maunganui Main Beach.

The steeper track is the Waikorere Track which has a lot more stairs but is far better if you're fit enough. This route climbs gradually at first and is shorter than the other tracks. This will take you 1 hour and 5 minutes or less from the Mount Maunganui Main Beach.

People do the track for various reasons. First, they climb up the track to enjoy the great views at the summit, may it be their first time or not. Second, they are preparing themselves for competitions that involve agility, endurance and strength. You could see people who have done a lot of laps already while you are still halfway the track (especially the Waikorere Track) which is quite amazing to witness. And lastly, it's just part of their daily exercise.
