Home can take on many different meanings this time of year; where you grew up, where you’re stationed, a place of comfort, or where your family is. Right now, there are millions of people who are remaining safe at home, but who might be separated from loved ones. No one is more familiar with the sacrifice and challenge of being separated from family than the men and women of the United States military. From The United States Army Band "Pershing's Own", we wish you a safe and happy holiday season.

We hope you enjoy this performance of "Goin' Home" by Czech composer Antonin Dvořák, arranged by Sgt. 1st Class Nadia Pessoa, and performed by Sgts. 1st Class Annette Barger & Nadia Pessoa. We are proud to feature footage from Shenandoah River State Park--a state park close to our home in Virginia.

Czech composer Antonin Dvořák wrote his Symphony No. 9, "From the New World," soon after arriving in America in 1893. He had come New York City to serve as the director of the National Conservatory of Music of America, a conservatory founded with a goal of cultivating American music. Shortly afterwards, Dvořák began working on his ninth symphony, which he said reflected his "impressions and greetings from the New World.” The longing and nostalgic solo English horn melody that opens the second movement of the symphony, was later set to words by one of Dvořák's students, William Arms Fisher. He called the new song, "Goin' Home," and had it published 1922.
