Portland mayor decries actions taken by federal agents against protesters

Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler accused U.S. President Donald Trump of using the city as a “staging ground to further his political agenda” and demanded Friday that the president remove militarized federal agents from the city after protesters were arrested on city streets far from the federal property officers had been sent to protect.

Federal law enforcement officers have charged at least 13 people with crimes related to the protests, according to Oregon Public Broadcasting. Some were detained by the federal courthouse, which has been the scene of the protests, but others were grabbed blocks away.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection has said its agents were deployed to Portland to support a newly launched U.S. Department of Homeland Security unit, tasked with enforcing an executive order from the president to protect federal monuments and buildings.

Demonstrators protesting racial injustice and police brutality have gathered outside the federal courthouse daily in Portland since the killing of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer in May.
