The flanks of Newberry Volcano, Oregon's largest volcano, are laced with many miles of lava tube caves. A few of them, such as Arnold Ice Cave, contain ice year-round, and used to be filled completely full of ice. Cave ice can be an important paleoclimate record of how past climates changed, and this can be tracked with isotopes and gasses trapped in the ice such as CO2, 18O, and deuterium (2H). Caves are fragile ecosystems and microclimates, and modern anthropogenic climate change is destroying cave ice and its valuable climate record forever.

Sadly, this cave is heavily vandalized. You can do your part by practicing "Leave No Trace" tactics and by removing found trash. The only way to protect caves is to get everyone to respect them.
