Station Rebuild - Part 5 - Yorkshire Dales Model Railway

Another update on the station rebuild this week.

Firstly I painted the platform edging, then stuck down some barrow crossings and planted some trees. The track is now all painted and ballasted. Trains are once again steaming through Ponden!

I also added coal staithes and filled them with crushed up coal pinched from the staithes at Haworth Station on the KWVR. Apparently, it turns out these staithes almost never backed on to the track - despite them being positioned in this way on almost every layout I’ve seen, including elsewhere on mine! This positioning would have restricted the doors opening fully and would not have been allowed. The culprit of this myth was traced back to an obscure 1970s modelling book, and the issue was settled in a study in RM analysing thousands of aerial photographs of the real thing. Funny how we all to often model what we see each other model, rather than what was really the case!

Finally, I grassed and fenced the right hand side of the board, adding the station masters cottage (a Wills Craftman Kit) and modelling a path leading up the hill.

Next up, I’ve got a platform shelter to build for the nearest platform.
