A Closer Look: 19th century Fashion - How To Tell Different Decades Apart? Part One | Cultured Elegance

In this video, we will discuss the changing times of 19th century fashion and how to tell the difference between the different decades. We talk about 1800s fashion and the influence of classical antiquity- featuring an emphasis on the white muslin Grecian gown. Then in the 1810s we see more color and the dresses drawing closer to the body; there is also more ornamentation and firmer fabrics. In the 1820s fabrics remain firm and greater detail color and patter on the garments emerge. In the 1830s we see sleeves grow in size and the skirt too, the waist is at a natural position and there is extreme exuberance on the garments and over the top motifs. In the 1840s there is a drastic transition to demure modesty with the onset of queen Victoria’s coronation. The dresses stay domed in shape but have little ornamentation and there are no large puffed sleeves. The dress is fitted to the body and then descends into a domed shaped skirt, the shoulders also are seen in a sloping fashion.
